The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gave US$210 million to the University of Cambridge in October 2000, the largest single grant to a UK university, which was used to create the Gates Cambridge Scholarship scheme. In October of 2001, the inaugural cohort of Fulbright Scholars moved into the campus’s residential halls.
Gates Cambridge awards over eighty full-tuition scholarships year to exceptional students from outside the United Kingdom so that they can earn a master’s or doctoral degree in any field of study offered by the University of Cambridge. Twenty-five grants will be given out in the US round, and fifty-five will be given out in the International round, with roughly two-thirds of the rewards going to PhD students.
At any given time, the University of Cambridge is home to at least 225 Scholars representing somewhere around 50 different nations. These students represent a wide range of academic disciplines and can be found across the University’s various departments and Colleges. Around the world, there are more than 1,700 Gates Cambridge alums.

Eligibility Criteria of Gates Cambridge Scholarship
- Be a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom
- Have applied to start studying for an eligible postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge by the time you take up your scholarship
- Have been offered admission to study at Cambridge judge Business School, Lucy Cavendish College, St Edmund’s College or Wolfson College
- Demonstrate outstanding intellectual ability and leadership potential
- Intend to remain in residence at Cambridge for the duration of your course.
In addition to these general criteria, each college has its own specific requirements that you’ll need to meet in order to be considered for their scholarship. How to apply for Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2023-24 in the UK
If you are interested in applying for this scholarship, here are some tips to help you get started.
First, make sure you meet the eligibility criteria. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a citizen of an eligible country and be planning to study for a postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge. You can find a list of eligible countries on the Gates Cambridge website.
Next, you will need to submit an online application form. In your application, you will need to provide information about your academic background and achievements, as well as your extracurricular activities and leadership experience.
